Our Olympics sprinting winner is...

Our fires are getting tiresome...

... but they produce some amazing sunsets.  The smoke from our newest close fire, the Sam Jim fire, is irritating when I try to sleep at night or breathe when working in the garden, but look at the beauty they also produce.

We may have fires bothering us humans but, Ziva seems not to be bothered at all.  In fact, she FINALLY achieved success today in her "squirrel Olympics" and brought her best game to catching a squirrel.  Oh, she's tried and tried but they are fast and she's lost until today.

She's a little worse for wear but she was so proud.  Even we could see pride in her accomplishment.  We could also see a cut nose and many spider webs decorating her hide as all those trips through the underbrush worked their magic.  She received praise, a cleaning with hydrogen peroxide and hot dog pieces as her trophy.

All dead things are unceremoniously thrown on the roof for the ravens to also get their reward for keeping things from going to waste.  The light skies are smoke in this picture.

The hens are laying an egg a day and I'm beginning to wonder if we'll never see large eggs again.  The three brown eggs are next to a large egg from the store. The girls haven't shown any inclination to use a nesting box which is driving me crazy.   They have nice, fluffy shavings and clean boxes but insist on laying them in the dirt of the run.

Today, I didn't open any doors to the outside EXCEPT for the nesting box doors to make them go through the boxes to get used to getting up in them. Didn't work as they couldn't even be coaxed into the boxes with broccoli, marigolds or sunflower kernels.  Picked up 2 girls and tried putting them into a box and only received scratches for my trouble.

Trying again tomorrow.  Hoping they REALLY want out of the coop and run...

... soon......
